As Tropical Storm Claudette churned through the western Caribbean, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite captured these images of the storm at 2:46 am EDT on the 10th of July, 2003. Claudette was still about 200 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman when the images were taken, and at that time, Claudette was classified as a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. The storm was moving quickly across the central and western...

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite captured several snapshots of Tropical Storm Bill, the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, as it got organized in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week. Bill was first named as a tropical storm at 11:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday June 29th, 2003, by the National Hurricane Center while over the south-central Gulf of Mexico. Taken a little over an hour before then, the first TRMM overpass (left column of images) shows a weakly...

1n the 1960s Fort Churchill was a quite large military base - situated about 7 miles from Churchill town. The Canadian Defence Research Board was there testing the Black Brant rocket at a Rocket Testing Range set up in 1957. The USAF had a detachment there ,a SAC or Srtategic Iir Command -more of a "listening post" than having any bombers at Churchill airport.why I never found out. And the Canadian Army had a School of Winter warfare. An ideal place to train soldiers how to live in...

Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle and Space Station have tracked regional environmental changes spanning decades. Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest lake, serves as one example of an area experiencing significant changes that have been well documented from space. Over the past twenty years, the lake's water levels have decreased in conjunction with increasing development from the fast-growing city of Guadalajara. Chapala is an alpine lake in west-central Mexico, resting at an elevation of 1,500...

(Released 25 June 2002) The Science Tantalus Fossae is a set of long valleys on the eastern side of Alba Patera. These valleys are referred to as grabens and are formed by extension of the crust and faulting. When large amounts of pressure or tension are applied to rocks on timescales that are fast enough that the rock cannot respond by deforming, the rock breaks along faults. In the case of a graben, two parallel faults are formed by extension of the crust and the rock in between the faults...

(Released 18 April 2002) The Science This THEMIS image is of Bosporus Planum, located in a region of smooth plains that appear to have formed from lava flows. A crater, ~7 km in diameter, on the left edge of the image has produced an ejecta blanket that can be seen radiating from the crater. Lobes of ejecta such as those seen close to the crater rim are not formed at most typical craters and may indicate that there was a ice component in the sub-surface material when the impact occurred. This is the front and reverse of a stereoscopic view, stereograph, stereoview, stereo view of Salina Kansas, along Santa Fe Avenue. Original title "View of Santa Fe Avenue, Salina", however the writing on the front has the word 'on' and not 'of' and 'Salina' and not 'Saline' and these have been corrected. It has been dated from (1868?-1906?) by the NYPL, and since it was published before 1923, it is now in the public domain in the U.S.A. These images are from The New York Public...

" Jenny Green Teeth   In Lancashire, Cheshire, and Shropshire, from the 19th century to within living memory, children were threatened that if they went near pools the waterspirit Jenny (or Ginny) Greenteeth would catch them; some said she also lurked in the treetops, where she could be heard moaning at night (Wright, 1913: 198-9). According to Charlotte Burne, this bogey was 'an old woman who lurks beneath the green weeds that cover stagnant ponds; Ellesmere children were warned that if...

World's Fair Extract 1931-1940 Showwomen of the West In these days of ungallantry when women are apt to pose as men’s equals - and sometimes superiors - one doesn’t like to be accused of neglecting the “gentler sex.” It was therefore with a certain sense of shame that I listened to the chidings of a lady well known in the arena of Western Showland who not without some justification charged me with being one-sided in my reminiscences of showlife in days gone by. “Your pictures of the...

This is a collection, and list of the comic strips "Charley Chaplin's Comic Capers"/Charlie Chaplin's Comic Capers. The problem with a collection like this, is that various newspapers released the same comic at different times. Unfortunatily the only newspaper that seems to have released each comic from begining to end was the "Chicago Herald" a newspaper published between 1914-1918, then later renamed. It was drawn by several artists during its run. The comic was originally...

THE NIGHT-SOIL MEN IT IS AUGUST 1854, AND LONDON IS A CITY OF SCAVENGERS. Just the names alone read now like some kind of exotic zoological catalogue: bone-pickers, rag-gatherers, pure-finders, dredgermen, mud-larks, sewer-hunters, dustmen, night-soil men, bunters, toshers, shoremen. These were the London underclasses, at least a hundred thousand strong. So immense were their numbers that had the scavengers broken off and formed their own city, it would have been the fifth-largest in all of...

"James McNeill Whistler participated in the artistic ferment of Paris and London in the late nineteenth century, crafted a distinctive style  from diverse sources, and arrived at a version of Post-Impressionism in the mid-1860s, a time when most of his contemporaries in the avant-garde were still exploring Realism and Impressionism. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Whistler spent part of his youth in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where his father, a civil engineer, advised on the construction...
